Our museum library, housed in the Kirch Wing of Wilhelmshöhe Palace, has been a public reference library since 1931. Consisting of about 130,000 volumes and subscribing to 450 periodicals, it provides a comprehensive, up-to-date resource on all areas of the collections cared for by Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel:

  •   Art History
  •   Classical Archaeology
  •   Applied Art and Wallpaper
  •   Cultural Anthropology
  •   Pre- and Early History
  •   History of Astronomy and Technology

One main focus is on artist monographs, exhibition and inventory catalogues.

Purchases from 1997 onwards are indexed in an online catalogue (OPAC). Older books are indexed in a card catalogue. Material on the main collection areas of the Hessisches Landesmuseum, the Wallpaper Museum and the Collection of Astronomy and Physics must be ordered in advance for use in the reading room, please take note of the relevant information in OPAC.

Use of the museum library is free, but books cannot be taken out of the reading room. The reading room is also the Print Room's study area. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement.
